The Boston Bomber....
On January 31, 2007 the city of Boston was in the throws of what was thought to be a terrorist type attack. Several "packages" were discovered thoughout the city. Boston officials acted quickly. Bomb squads were called in. The devices were rendered harmless. A crisis was averted.
The devices were part of marketing campain. Anyone who's old enough to remember "Light Bright" would have a good understanding of what the devices looked like. The devices had an image of a cartoon charecter on them. The charecter is from the popular TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force".
In light of the fact that the devices turned out to be nothing but a marketing tool, many people in and around the city of Boston have accused city officials of over reacting. I personaly think that city officials did the right thing...sort of. When the first device was discovered, the city should have taken the action that they did. I even agree that when the second and maybe third device was discovered, that similar actions should be taken. But after a while, I think officials should have realized that the images on the devices are cartoonish. I don't think a terrorist is going to put a cartoon charecter on a bomb.
The other issue with the whole ordeal is that the devices were place throughout the city three weeks prior. There were videos of the devices being placed, up on the web. The city acted quickly when the devices were discovered, but it took the city, and it's residents, almost a month to find the devices. Anyone could have blown up the entire city if they were given a month window in which to do it.
The news keeps reporting that the city over reacted. I think the real story is the fact that devices, which the city thought to be explosives, went almost a month without being discovered. To quote Mayor Menino, "To think in a post 911 world....."
