There has been a push in several souther states to change the name of high schools, and other public buildings, that are named after Confederate Generals and such. The reasoning being that the American Civil War was all about slavery, and that it is disrespectful to African Americans to honor Confederate heroes.
The American Civil War was not all about slavery. While slavery played a big part in the Civil War, there were other factors, such as, Economic, States Rights, and the Souther way of life. The south fought for what they thought was right. A fundemental cornerstone of the American government is States Rights. The south felt that states rights were being infringed upon by the Federal Government, and did what they could to fight back against that.
After the the war was over, the Federal Government's Veterans' Affairs office, offered compensation, and pensions, to all soldiers, Union and Confederate. As far as the Federal Government was concerned, each side had served their country with honor, and therefore should be treated as such. I agree with this view. The south fought for what it thought was right, and therefore the Confederate soldiers should be honored as any other American soldier.
For what ever reason, most people believe that the Civil War was all about slavery, and that the Confederate military are nothing but horrible people. The north had it's share of officers who did things that are, or should be considered, horrible. Take General Sherman, and his burning of Atlanta, for instance. Not only did that destroy and entire city, but also made homeless everyone, including the African Americans who lived there, homeless and jobless.
So the people who want to forget that the Civil War happend, need to remember that those who fail to learn/remember history are destine to repeat it.
