Don Imus
Don Imus was fired from his radio gig for a comment he made about the Rutgers' Women's Basketball team. Imus, during and exchange with another member of the show, called the womens team "Nappy-headed hos". Imus said he was sorry, met with the women's team, and was fired.
I feel that Imus statements were blown out of proportion. I don't think that Imus said what he said out of hatred or from a racist or sexist standpoint. Imus said it trying to be funny. Trying to be funny doesn't make it right, but does make it different. Someone said that planning to kill someone, and killing someone in a rage come from different standpoints, but have the same result. That's right they do, someone still ends up dead, but in court one is tried at muder 1 and the other as manslaughter, with two different prison sentances.
I think a bigger issue is the Rev. Al Sharpton. Rev. Sharpton called for Imus dismissal. The Reverand also said that the airwave should not be a vehical which comercializes such statements. I wonder if the Reverand has ever heard of 50 cent? 50 cent raps using the term ho all the time. If Rev. Sharpton wants to stamp out hate speach he should also ask that radio stop playing 50 cent. I know that Rev. Sharpton has had 50 cent on his show, and has never stated that what 50 cent says is wrong.
The reason what Rev. Sharpton has done (and not done) is so appauling is that it obscures is message. If he is opposed to people using the term ho, he should be opposed to it all the time, and not pick and choose who can and who can't say it. The rules become very confusing when one does not know what they can and can't say (as it it apparently okay for 50 cent and not for Imus).
I don't think Imus should have been fired, as he didn't say anything any worse than what someone like 50 cent says. I do think there should have been some action taken, purhaps a suspension. Overall, I think that this whole situation is way over blown.
